In the early 1970's, Trevor Shaw tried to buy a real open fire with a canopy - and discovered there wasn't really anyone out there to provide one, at least one worthy of his home. This is a cutting of an advert placed in the Birmingham Post in 1972.
2012 is our 40th anniversary year! We are hoping to organise some events to celebrate and also re-open the showroom at Leigh Sinton. During the last 40 years we have helped many people and contractors create fires for their homes or pubs in all sorts of period styles or takes on a period style. We have also resolved many smoking chimney issues to allow people to use their fires as much as they want rather than in fear of a room full of smoke.
During the early years of Camelot, founder Trevor Shaw offered customers traditional dog and grate fires with freestanding canopies. Then he identified the opportunity to create more efficient Thermovent woodburning fires that could retain the period appearance. Later, he developed much more modern fire solutions, including a wood burning stove version (shown), but in time discontinued these later products.
Our family
What we believe
Quality handmade products with a creative design flair has been a theme in our family.
Trevors wife Margaret offered customers hand crafted cast house name plaques and post boxes. Together, they also developed a range of handmade garden furniture. Trevor and Margaret’s daughter Caron runs English Eclectics offering designer & vintage homewares. Having been involved with Camelot previously, their son Paul took over the fires business in 2010.
We believe in real open fires in the home. We offer good value and personal service to all our clients. We believe in talking to people to understand their situation and desires so we can create the right, traditional looking fire for them.
We are always looking for ways to make our woodburning fires better or introduce new ideas. We use technology to reduce travel and delivery times and increase service, quality and performance.
We know we're not the cheapest option available and our fires aren't right for everyone. But thats OK. Each to their own.
CE or HETAS approval
Heritage isn't just about the past. We believe its intrinsic in some organisations, some people and some products and places. Thats why we're delighted to say our Second Generation Thermovent fire has passed the new European regulations for all domestic heating appliances achieving a net efficiency of over 50% with a rated output of 14.1KW. Our fire is now also a HETAS approved appliance meaning it meets all regulations in the UK and Europe. For more information visits the HETAS website.
