Best Ways to Store Your Firewood

Knowing the best ways to store your firewood is an essential part of having a fire. You need to be able to store your wood supply safely and where it will be covered from the weather.

An open fireplace design will allow you to see the sort of fireplace you could have in your home, further allowing you to choose the best design for you.

Cover the Logs

Covering the logs helps them to be protected from certain weather conditions. The best ways to cover the logs is using a plastic groundsheet. These are waterproof and will protect the logs from getting damp. However, before covering the logs, you need to bear in mind their condition. Are they wet or damp? If yes then don’t cover them just yet. Wait till the logs are dry and then cover them. Covering the logs when they’re wet will mean they won’t be able to dry and therefore will stay damp making them ineffective for a fire.

Store with Bark Up

As you start to stack up the firewood, take note of how you are doing it. You want to ensure that the bark on the logs is facing up. The bark acts as a protective shield against rain or water vapour; stopping it from getting moist, therefore, not burning well. Traditional fires work best with dried out wood as it catches fire a lot quicker and burns a lot easier.

Log Store

Storing logs somewhere dry is the best way to keep them as they will then be in the best condition for use. The optimum places to keep your logs would be a shed or an outside container as these will protect from the weather and they will allow the logs to be off the ground. In the store, you can also cover the logs in a ground sheet to ensure further that they will stay dry.

Stack Logs on Wooden Pallets

Stacking logs on something such as wooden pallets enables you to keep the logs dry from the bottom. Should they get wet on the underside, the water will seep up towards the top ones, further resulting in having damp logs that won’t burn well. With these pallets, the logs will be kept off of the ground, and they will be open to a circulation of air. These wooden pallets are very cheap to buy and are often free at garden centres.
