FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE A FEATURE FIREPLACE
Your preferred style, and that of the home and room your open fireplace is in, is central to everything we do here at Camelot Real Fires. Understanding the style of open fire you might like and making that vision a reality as a working open fire is what we do.
Your unique Open fireplace
Every customer is unique and has their own style, tastes, and ideas about what their perfect open fire will look like in their home. That’s why we go the extra mile by offering you access to our huge range of fireplace images as inspiration. We also offer a nationwide show visit service where we can bring examples of our fires plus other materials to you at your premises and survey your open fireplace at the same time. There is a charge for these visits, but we offer credits against orders over a certain value.
Once an order is confirmed our proven design service enables us to present clear and relevant fireplace images of the canopy, firegrate or dog irons we are going to create before we strike metal so you know you’re happy. That’s how we create open fires that are as unique as you are whilst working perfectly and contributing to a beautiful living space.
Some customers are incredibly knowledgeable about the detail of the period their property relates to, others have a vision, and some just want us to help them create something that looks amazing every time they sit down in front of their roaring open fire. From our perspective any approach to finding your style is the right one as long as it feels right to you.
A key part of our role is to ensure the design is deliverable, safe, won’t let smoke into the room and is within a budget that you are willing to invest.

OPEN FIRE OR STOVE?
One of the key decisions you need to make is whether you are going to have an open fire or stove. Now we love stoves as efficient solid fuel burners – but let’s be clear – you will never make a stove look like a period open fire and don’t believe anyone who says it will. It will also have a door of some sort reducing the ambience created by the sounds, aroma and view of the flames.
It’s also NOT the case that open fires will not be allowed anywhere in the UK under the proposed Clean Air regulations from 2022. More info here…
“Paul was able to design an unobtrusive canopy to work with our original chimney and fireplace in a 16th century cottage renovation. We now have a lovely working “open” fire in our dining room which has been great over the winter months. Thanks again.”
Michelle, Oxfordshire, October 2016
Thermovent open fire
At Camelot we offer customers choice in fireplace design, but also a choice of open fire solution.
You can choose our ‘all-in-one’ open fire solution – the Thermovent woodburning open fire which is supplied complete with a canopy , dog irons and grate front. The Thermovent high efficiency heating system ensures you and your family will be cosy all winter.
As an alternative we can create for you a bespoke canopy (sometimes called a fire hood) with a firegrate or basket underneath.
Either of these options will look amazing in your fireplace and be made to order just for you so is a unique centrepiece for your room.
As we are solely specialists in open fires we focus on producing the highest quality tailor-made canopies, firegrates, firebaskets and dog irons that really do work.

The key features of an Open Fire Fireplace design
Canopy or fire hood
The canopy is the most diverse and impactful element in most fireplace designs. The size and shape ranges from compact to large, rounded or squared off, straight edges, curves, wide or tight angles. There is also a wide variety of materials and finishes available, such as dark gun metal steel, copper, or polished brass. We can also create an antique leather finish using accelerated rusting and are currently exploring many other custom finishes. These can be smooth or textured to suit the your desired open fire style.
Thermovent open fires include a canopy within the price. For a canopy only open fireplace design we have our unique twin skin canopy where an outer canopy is designed to look amazing and an inner canopy is focused on ensuring the smoke goes up the chimney. We also make traditional smaller single skin canopies. More…

Firegrates or firebaskets
The firegrate (or grate front if on a Thermovent) can be designed to complement your canopy (or it can be the other way around). The thickness and shape of the bars, the flourishes we add such as twists, balls, curves, angles and scrolls in the metalwork, really add personality to each open fire we make. We can also use cutting techniques to cut out shapes and patterns even in heavy gauge iron for stunning effect.
The finished product is a beautiful and personal piece, which not only looks amazing but becomes a stunning feature in your room. More….
“Hi Paul, our Camelot fire is proving its worth. Absolutely superb in our thatched cottage. If you need a further endorsement please make contact.”

Dog irons or Andirons
Dog irons (originally called Andirons) are often designed to compliment the fireplace design or the fire grate itself. Some customers prefer to start with the dog irons however as they are centre front in the fireplace design. One of the key design benefits of dog irons is the additional width they give to the piece which can help to match the scale of the open fireplace or the firegrate and fire basket.
Our dog irons are often created using traditional forging techniques where our blacksmith manipulates and forms the red hot iron into the shape of the key design features. If we’re casting in iron, brass or bronze the patterns we make can feature an unlimited range of design elements, when creating new patterns is an intricate process requiring patience and investment, something our craftsmen achieve with care and precision. Whether we leave the casting polished or natural also makes a huge difference to the design of the room.
Another aspect of dog irons can be scale. Sometimes they need to be small to match to overall scale of the open fireplace, however there is on occasion the opportunity to create real impact with tall dog irons. More….
