Open fires made here at Camelot are done so to the highest standard, and as such safety is a priority. Every step of our production process has been refined over the years to ensure the safety of our customers and their homes after they have purchased our bespoke open fires. Safety is paramount during the manufacturing of these canopies but is also incredibly essential to consider when our fires are being used, installed and admired.
Some of our top tips around fire safety include the main points which are ensuring that the fire is not pushing smoke into the room, the fire is within a sound and well-maintained chimney and that there is a suitable fire grate with the capacity to retain fire and room safety. So, considering the first of our three points, how is it possible to know if a fire is smoking? This can be identified usually by either the smell of smoke, the visible presence of smoke in the room and the staining of the material just above the fireplace to black. It can also be incredibly useful to have a carbon monoxide alarm. Ensuring that good quality logs are being burnt greatly reduces the risk of smoke from the open fire also.
Chimneys can be maintained by ensuring chimney sweeps are contracted around once a year to clean them out. A small amount of smoke sporadically is to be expected, especially during refuel and other similar circumstances. Finally, our bespoke fireguards help to catch any sparks and clearly signal to children and animals that the open fire behind is not to be got to close to, helping to ensure any of our customers with children or pets are as safe as possible. To ensure that any sparks that do fly out don’t hit the carpet, its good to be mindful that your open fire has the correct size fire hearth.
Sometimes, our customers mention what they’ve heard about how open fires are more unsafe that the alternatives, such as stoves, however this is not the case. For example, the presence of a fire guard, as mentioned above, clearly signals that the main part of the fire should not be touched and creates a barrier between the heat. On a stive, however, this barrier is not present and the glass panel is much smaller, providing limited protection from the high heat of the fire. Similarly, it has been proven that the gases that open fires release up the chimney are at a significantly lower temperature than those that come out of stoves. There are many benefits to choosing one of our open fires therefore, and your safety as the customer is one of our top priorities.
