Camelot fire grates are, like all our work, made to order by hand. Often to a size or design that is unique to your fireplace situation.
Many elements of our fire grates are hand forged or include elements cast at foundries in the Black Country using our own patterns.
Over the last 5 years we have also explored the potential of modern cutting techniques to give us a platform from which we can apply our handmade techniques to create beautiful pieces that are even more unique.
The style of the basket and the detailing tends to direct the material, but sometimes customers prefer the rugged finish of hand forged over castings.

STYLES OF FIRE GRATES
You can select the design of your fire grate or basket along a few clear lines with known costs which you can find here. Other than the style the other key design aspect is the size. The fireplace canopy has an influence on the fire basket or fireplace grate size. A big grate needs big logs to fill it or you will have a small fire in the middle of a big grate.
Fire baskets are of a design where there are clearly sides of some depth to hold the logs or coal in and may have dog irons attached to the basket. Fire baskets are grouped as having a few horizontal bars or having a greater number of vertical bars. There are many different style and detail options we can consider with you.
Fire grates are much more flat or open in nature. The classic Swans nest grate is great example of a grate over a basket. Dog irons would typically be separate to a fire grate though we have made one such.
Additional items such as ashtrays or firebacks can be added also if you wish.

Based on our quotation and agreed description with reference images, once a deposit is paid we will develop a sketch of your fire basket/fire grate for you to review, revise and approve. Once we have agreement we will strike metal to create your unique piece of fireplace furniture.
Our design process has been refined over many years and never let us down (its has saved us a few times instead). We’re confident whatever you might ask us to create you will find a close alignment between your design and the finished piece.

Camelot prides itself on its attention to detail and quality of craftsmanship. As a result, there are multiple different methods of creation and design that Camelot offer for its fire grates. For example, hand forged detail on firegrate bars. Below are possible options for your fire grate:

A little history and some tips
Fire grates and baskets were introduced a long while after dog irons but were often rested onto the dog irons to create a set. They were introduced primarily with the use of coal as a fuel. Unlike wood, coal needs air underneath to give enough air to burn. In addition coal leaves clinkers which will not burn. Coal also burns much hotter than wood and was found to destroy hearths much more if not raised.
In time fire grates and baskets were made as sets with dog irons and then many new designs were created which did not feature dog irons – in particular the cast iron inset designs.
We strongly recommend burning on a solid bed if you are burning only wood. With a slotted grate you will burn a lot more wood and get less heat.
