In today’s world, many products focus on efficiency. Efficiency ought to mean getting maximum output with minimal wasted effort or resource, however more often than not, the word ‘efficiency’ is a euphemism for sacrificing performance. Products hailed as efficient have, in the past taught us that we have to accept the reduction in performance as a trade-off against efficiency. The first low energy light bulbs for example, cost a lot less to run, but we had to wait in dull twilight for a tiresome minute or so before they got to their full brightness, failing to deliver on performance and efficiency at the same time.
Some years ago, the team at Camelot Real Fires were faced with the challenge of increasing the performance of open fires – traditionally thought of as giving low heat output unless you were sat within a few feet of the actual flames. It is actually relatively easy to get more heat from a fire – you just throw more logs on it don’t you? Whilst this might give you a temporary boost in heat, the effort involved and the cost of extra logs will leave you sweating long after the fire has died away. In other words, it’s not an efficient solution. In answer to this, Camelot Real Fires realised that a fundamental change was needed in the way heat output was generated within the actual body of the fire itself. Luckily, we are experts in the inner workings of a fireplace, and thus the Thermovent system was created.

Thermovent is now the standard feature in all of our traditional open fire and Designfire projects, it’s revolutionary and innovative design delivering unrivaled performance and incredible efficiency, the likes of which are not found in any other open fire out there! We understand that big claims require big proof, and in our world it doesn’t get much bigger than HETAS accreditation. Our Thermovent not only has HETAS appliance accreditation, it has been confirmed to give a heat output of an impressive 14.1kwwith a net efficiency of over 50%, proving it to be the most efficient open fire solution around!
All this has been achieved by the unique way in which Thermovent is built. The hot gases created by the fire are kept within the Thermovent body, passing the heat into the metal. This in turn heats 7 special heat exchange chambers housed within a double skin to minimise energy loss at this crucial stage in the process. The chambers quickly heat the air, and keep it separate from the smoke, which is directed up the chimney. The heated air and design of the Thermovent create an air flow which pushes the clean hot air out into the room, which in turn creates an intake of the colder air at the base of the fire. The cooler air is then heated in the chamber and the process repeats. All this, in combination with the traditional radiant heat generated by the actual flames of the fire, give all Camelot Real Fires an outstanding heat output.
Thermovent fires also include a redesigned flue baffle and fire pit. The baffle means lighting the fire is much quicker and easier as the user can control the heat draw, and when the fire is not lit, the baffle can be closed, reducing the loss of any heat generated from other sources. Our efficient fire pit also allows wood to be fully burned to ash rather than leaving un-burnt remains, meaning fewer logs and less effort are needed. Maximising efficiency and performance together has been built in to the very fabric of what we do at Camelot Real Fires.
So when it comes to open fires – traditional or modern – high performance and efficiency are no longer mutually exclusive thanks to the smart design of the Thermovent convection system. Have a look at our website for more details on how to maximise open fire performance and efficiency.
