With any form of heating, efficiency seems to be a buzzword that everyone throws around, and it’s not surprising. The cost of heating is almost always on the rise, and people are always keen to get the most for their money. With more options around now than there ever has been, navigating the jargon and finding a solution which is going to perform well and not cost the earth (both financially and environmentally) can prove to be a hefty challenge!
At Camelot, we’ve thought a lot about efficiency, what it really means to our customers, and how we can make a real difference. Firstly, let’s be honest; our customers don’t buy our fires because they are the most ‘energy efficient’, they aren’t necessarily looking for solutions to heat their entire home like a boiler or central heating system might, which is great because that’s not what we are about.
What our customers are looking for however, are beautiful open fires that will not only look amazing, but also work to the best possible standards. What we offer our customers goes a step further. We deliver the best possible standards, whilst minimising the input costs.
How do we achieve this? To answer that we have to look at how our fires work differently to other fireplace alternatives. Stoves and similar products will often be seen to boast the ‘best efficiency’, when really what they are measuring is heat output compared to fuel input. Simplistically, a stove can produce quite a large amount of heat for little in the way of fuel, however the heat travels out in every direction. This means you are spending money and consuming fuel in order to heat the back of your fireplace, the chimney; basically wasting a percentage of that heat on areas other that the ones you actually want to be warm!
Camelot’s founder Trevor Shaw created the innovative Thermovent convection system which is designed into our open fire, and cleverly draws in cold air at the bottom, superheats it within the belly of the fire, and then pushes it back out into the room as hot air, exactly where you want it. This method provides what we like to think of as ‘common sense’ efficiency. As well as being one of the best-rated open fires for efficiency on paper, our Thermovent open fires offer something that is often overlooked; comfort by sharing the heat it creates much more evenly across the whole room compared to a radiant heat stove or fire.
It’s easy to see why – comfort isn’t something easily measurable on a scale or a ratio, there are no defined increments or units of measurement for comfort, but it is arguably the most important factor when it comes to heating solutions. The simple fact is, however, that Thermovent open fires deliver greater comfort to the occupiers of a room, with relatively low fuel consumption. We can run our fires for 8 hours on just over 2 bags of kiln dried logs as shown in the picture. We believe that this is true efficiency – good for you, good for your family, as well as your wallet, and the environment!
